This is a six-week course (Course# C-10585) where you will be partnered with one of our highly experienced compensation consultant to learn best practices for developing pay ranges for your organization.
This program is for HR professionals and business owners who are embracing pay transparency and want to set up pay ranges that meet the needs of their organization.
Participants will work with instructor to:
- identify compensation goals,
- assess market data,
- determine internal equity,
- develop an internal compensation philosophy and
- create a communication plan for sharing the ranges internally in compliance with any federal or state laws.
You’ll engage in homework and self-assessments to prepare for each session. Plus, you’ll have dedicated Q&A time with your HR instructor, working exclusively with your organization.

Having two participants ensures a shared understanding of the company’s pay philosophy and strategy, promoting consistency in decision-making. It also facilitates better collaboration and implementation of pay policies across departments.

Here is What You’ll Learn Each Week:
- Week 1 – Crafting Your Organization’s Pay Philosophy: Determine your organization’s pay philosophy and create a written pay philosophy document
- Week 2 – Market Data for Competitive Pay Ranges: Learn how to research and utilize market data for pay ranges. Identify comparable organizations based on geography, size and industry. Learn how to evaluate data based on percentiles, min, mid and max.
- Week 3- Navigating Internal Equity and Compliance: Develop a process for understanding internal equity. What factors come into play under the MA Equal Pay Act such as skill, effort, responsibility and working conditions?
- Week 4 – Decoding FLSA Classifications and Exemptions: Learn the do’s and don’ts of Fair Labor Standards Act classifications including professional, administrative, executive and learned professional exemptions. Utitlize the Department of Labor’s advisor tool to understand terminology such as “matters of significance” and “discretion” and “supervision”.
- Week 5 – Building and Slotting Pay Ranges in Excel: Utilize Excel spreadsheets to develop pay ranges with minimum, midpoint and maximum and learn the process for slotting positions into ranges for nonexempt and exempt roles. The Department of Labor’s advisor tool will be used to guide learnings for compliance.
- Week 6 – Communicating Pay Ranges with Transparency and Compliance: Develop a communication plan for sharing ranges internally and externally. How will information be communicated? Understand how communications must follow MA pay transparency and pay equity guidelines.

The Massachusetts Express Grant
- Funding: Offers reimbursement, $20,000 per calendar year for training and development up to $3,000 per person/per course.
- Two course requires two individuals from the same company must attend.
- Eligibility:
- Must have fewer than 100 employees (part-time or full-time).
- Must be a registered business operating in Massachusetts that is contributing to the unemployment fund.
- All trainees are employed in Massachusetts (not required to live in MA).
- Businesses can only request reimbursement for W2 employees who are on the company’s payroll.
